ASAL USUL NEGERI MELAKA

THE DISCOVERY OF MELAKA BY PARAMESWARA

The assassination of Temagi in Temasik forced Parameswara and his followers to retreat to Muar. After traveling through forests and along breaches, they came to a river (Bertam River) in Bertam. Here, Parameswara decided to rest for a while by the banks of the river. Parameswara chose a shady tree and sat down, leaning against it. Suddenly, a white mouse dear appeared near his resting place. Parameswara’s hunting dog immediately chased the white mouse deer, which ran right to the riverbank.

Then, a seemingly miraculously thing happened. The cornered mouse deer suddenly turned and kicked the hunting dog into the river. Seeing the strange incident, Parameswara decided to establish his new kingdom there. The place was developed into Melaka taking the name of the shady tree under which Parameswara had leant during the incident.
